genetic engineering
Genetic engineering is one of the marvels of the modern world. Our ability to cultivate crops, to build more resilient crops, that’s amazing. Genetic engineering is another result of the amazing modern world that we take for gratitude. This ability to change DNA has indeed many benefits, reversing diseases the mosquitoes cause without harming them. It is true that genetic engineering has changed the world and has helped in a lot of cases. But there is another truth. The truth is that it is not often told or spoken of about genetic engineering. Genetic engineering like any amazing tool can be used for good and bad, it depends on how we use it. But it is clear that genetic engineering is being used more for bad than good. The harm far outweighs any little good it might do. Let me explain to you, what you’ll learn here may change your opinion on genetic engineering.
As I said earlier, genetic engineering is not just used for agriculture. It’s used for far more sinister purposes. Now you may be thinking “How can genetic engineering be used for sinister purposes?”. I will answer that question. I’m assuming you have heard the term: “broiler chicken”. Let me explain what they are, the meat industry makes these chickens with some genetic modification that drastically alters their DNA. These broiler chickens are raised in unsanitary environments and their lives are already horrible. We all know when the meat industry is involved, animal cruelty knows no bounds. But these chickens suffer not just from unjust cruelty inflicted on them, no. They are designed to grow up fast. Let me give you an example. The ideal chicken is living on a farm, a sanitary habitat, it is happy and it lives 5 – 10 years. That is the life every chicken needs. Now, broiler chickens are slaughtered anywhere from 21 days to 170 days old. In the US the typical slaughter age is 47 days, while in the EU the slaughter age is 42 days.
But even if somehow, they get a good life, and get rescued, they can only live for 2 years at best. Mostly at a couple of months, this is because they were unethically altered this way. They grow at such a fast rate, they age quicker, and their heart has no time to adjust and their bones become strained and unable to carry their huge body weight. The bones break leaving the broiler unable to move and this is already quite tragic, heart diseases only add to this suffering. The broiler hen becomes more susceptible to heart attacks, cancer, broken bones, and a host of other diseases and issues. This is the tragic reality of broiler chickens. Their life is hell! There is a common incorrect and offensive misconception: “They are meant to die, that’s why they were altered.” No living being is meant to die, every living being deserves to have a good life. Nothing deserves to die, absolutely nothing!
The situation may seem hopeless but it is not completely hopeless. This issue can still be fixed. First of all, there needs to be an unconditional ban on altering the DNA of hens and there must be a ban on meat as well. Every hen in the world should live a comfortable life that prioritizes their well – being, unbiased oversight is crucial for this. And spread the word, too, the fact that hens are suffering. Share it on social media and with your friends and family as well. Try to go undercover in slaughterhouses, infiltrate them, capture footage of animal cruelty, and expose it to the world. Hold protests outside slaughterhouses and force them to shut down. Urge your government to take strong action against animal cruelty. The path to a world where every hen lives an amazing life will be fraught with challenges, but I believe with the determination, willpower, and sense of compassion and morality we have, we will one day make that world.
